Deshaun Watson trade rumors: Texans’ David Culley tied into a pretzel trying to explain QB’s standing with team

Someone give David Culley a hand, please.

Deshaun Watson and the Texans are, seemingly, still heading for a split at some point this offseason. The organization has kept things quiet when it comes to Watson’s availability, but that changed ever so slightly on Thursday.

David Culley, new Texans head coach, is essentially that Donald Glover gif in which he walks into a burning room with a stack of pizzas and sees everyone else trying to put the flames out; Culley appeared on the “Huddle&Flow” podcast with Jim Trotter and Steve Wyche, and cast some doubt on Watson’s future with the organization.

“He is our starting quarterback as of right now,” Culley said. “He is our starting quarterback. Things happen between now and then. We’ll see what happens.”

The “right now” part is particularly telling, considering that the team remained committed to Watson being a Texan at the start of the 2021 season. “Right now” means, well, right now, and as Culley mentioned, things can change between now and then.

But at a news conference later in the day, as Culley reiterated Houston’s commitment to Watson as quarterback, he intimated that Watson’s commitment to the team is, essentially, as strong as it has ever been, and that he has no indication that Watson wants out of Houston.

You gotta feel for Culley: Entering his first season as an NFL head coach at age 65 and having to explain away the drama between Watson and the organization is a tough ask. And judging by his answers, it might not be working out.

Watson is, reportedly, completely done with the organization. Someone may want to let Culley in on that, too.
